Infineon targets two wheels 18/10/2007

motorcycles, engine controller With worldwide demand growing for motorcycle engine control, Infineon has launched the XC2700 family of 32bit microcontrollers. The parts will allow system makers to build cost effective electronic engine control in motorcycles around the world in order to meet upcoming emission standards.
The XC2700 family, based on the C166SV2 core, provides single cycle execution from a 66MHz five stage pipeline at up to 80MHz. It also integrates key peripherals such as memory, voltage regulator and interfaces to reduce the overall system cost.
“Electronic engine management for motorcycles require a cost effective, high performance solution,” said Jochen Hanebeck, senior vice president and general manager of Infineon’s microcontroller business unit. “The XC2700 family helps reduce the system cost of the engine management system, whilst providing the performance needed to meet the legislation on emissions around the world.”
China and India, the world’s largest motorcycle markets, are developing tougher emission control standards, driving the need for cost effective electronic engine management systems. Indian companies expect to manufacture 15million two wheelers a year by 2010, whilst China expects to make 21m bikes a year in 2010. Despite enhanced fuel consumption and emission requirements, motorcycles in these regions generally cost less than $500.
