Microsoft is well known – infamous, some might say – for pc oriented operating systems with large memory requirements, such as XP and the recently introduced Vista. But the company has had its eyes on the embedded world for some time – longer than you might think, in fact.
The most obvious embedded operating system in the Microsoft portfolio is Windows CE. A debate has continued for some time about what CE actually stands for. Some say ‘compact edition’; others claims it’s ‘consumer electronics’. But Mike Hall, senior technical product manager with Microsoft’s mobile and embedded devices group, says it doesn’t stand for anything at all!
