WEEE is now in force

WEEE – the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations – came into force on 1 July. If you’re a producer and you haven’t registered with a compliance scheme, then you’re breaking the law.
The WEEE regulations apply to six broad categories:
Producers – any business that manufactures, imports or rebrands electrical and electronic products.
Retailers and Distributors – any business that sells electrical and electronic equipment to end users.
Local authorities.
Waste management industry.
Exporters and reprocessors.
Businesses and other non household users of EEE.
The WEEE Regulations require producers of electronic equipment to take responsibility for paying for treatment and recycling of electronic waste and these companies should have registered with a compliance scheme.
Retailers of electrical equipment, meanwhile, will be required to take back waste equipment on a like for like basis when a customer purchases a new item. For example, an old toaster for a new toaster. Alternatively retailers of household electrical equipment can pay into a fund run by a retailer compliance scheme.
