ST, CEA to research power for portables 29/06/2007

energy sources, rechargeable batteries, micro fuel cells, energy scavenging STMicroelectronics and French public technological research organisation CEA are collaborating on the development of miniaturized energy sources. The two companies will establish a common laboratory in Tours and Grenoble to pursue research in fields such as solid state microbatteries and micro fuel cells.
The four year collaboration will focus on powering mobile phones, laptops and other portable electronic products. Other energy generation, conversion and storage technologies to be investigated include thermoelectric and mechanical scavenging techniques.
According to Carmelo Papa, general manager of ST’s industrial and multisegment sector, pictured, the proliferation of portable devices had created huge demand for energy sources. “But existing solutions leave room for improvements in terms of performance, operating life and environmental impact. We believe the complementary skills of ST and CEA Liten will lead to the development of cost effective new technologies that will meet these challenges.”
Jean Therme, director of CEA’s Technological Research Division, added: “The manufacturing know how of ST will be an important asset in the industrialisation of the new technologies we will develop.”
