How multiple cores are improving data processing efficiency 12/07/2010
Multiple cores on a chip is no longer deemed a novel way to boost computational performance. Chip firms recognise that using multiple cpus in parallel gives a better return than complex architectural tweaks to the cpu itself. By doing so, each elemental core can be tailored in terms of chip area ... Read more

How new coding approach helps optical systems to hit 100Gbit/s 24/05/2010
There are several reasons why engineers are working harder when designing high capacity optical systems – higher data rates mean fewer photons per optical pulse and there is greater signal dispersion. Adding to the challenge, service providers want the reach of 40 and 100Gbit/s systems to match ... Read more

Closing the skills gap

The skills gap has been the subject of many commentaries over the recent past. The problem of an aging engineering population, combined with a decrease in the number of people looking to follow engineering as a career, means there's a shortfall. EngineeringUK summed up the problem in its report published at the end of 2009. According to its research, the UK needs to create 580,000 engineers in the next few years – replacing those who are close to retirement and to fill new jobs. This can only be done by attracting new entrants to the profession or by upskilling those from other sectors. That's a significant number of people and a figure that's not going to be attained overnight.
